This 1960 Austin-Healey Sprite has been refurbished and modified to replicate the BMC Competition Department rally car that John Sprinzel campaigned to a class victory in the 1958 Alpine Rally. The refurbishment began in Hawaii in 2014, after this car was acquired from Sprinzel, and included custom bodywork, a repaint in blue, suspension modifications, a conversion to right-hand drive, and a reupholstered interior in blue vinyl all under the guidance of Sprinzel. A replacement 1,275cc inline-four was installed and fitted with larger carburetors along with a “rib-case” four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes 13” steel wheels, Lucas driving lights, a remote oil cooler, an electronic distributor, a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and a wind deflector. Service in June 2023 consisted of replacing the air filter, battery, intake-manifold gasket, and fuel pump. This modified Bugeye Sprite is now offered on dealer consignment in Oregon with service and modification records, build photos, literature, and a clean Hawaii title that lists the model year as 1961.
